The prosecution team was made up of justices from eleven Allied nations: Australia, Canada, China, France, Great Britain, India, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Soviet Union and the United States of America. The Tokyo trial lasted two and a half years, from May 1946 to November 1948. Other war criminals were tried in the respective victim countries. War crime trials were held at ten different locations in China.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky – I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me – I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notion
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

APA,MLA,AMA,Chicago,Turabian引文格式简介:总起来说APA主要是用于心理、教育及社会科学等学科;MLA是用于人文、艺术等学科;AMA主要用于医学、健康及生物科学等学科;Chicago主要用于书籍、杂志、新闻等媒体。在引用文献时,各个杂志有各个杂志的要求,但多遵循一种规范。常见的引文格式主要有APA,MLA和Chicago三种规范,Google Scholar也支持这三种引文格式的输出。这些引文格式之间有何区别?本文作一简要介绍。我也是一边学习一边撰写,就当一个学习笔记吧。
APAAPA是美国心理学会(American Psychological Association, APA)所制定的一种引文格式。APA主要用于心理、教育及社会科学等学科。
APA参考文献的文中格式一般为作者和发表日期加上页码,而非常见的数字格式。
最新的APA引文格式是第6版,出版于2009年。官方网站是

,可以在其官方网站找到APA引文格式的最新版本。简要的概括一下,APA引文格式的要求主要有以下几个方面:
1、文章格式是双倍行间,包括参考文献也是如此。
2、引文要整体缩进0.5英寸或1.27cm。
3、引文排列顺序是第一作者姓氏的字母顺序。
4、作者的姓氏第一个字母大写,全名并不要求大写。
5、如果引文中有2篇或2篇以上的引文是同一作者,排序则以引文发表年代计算。
6、文章第一个字母要大写,杂志名称要全部大写。
7、杂志及期刊卷要用斜体,期刊的期不要斜体。如果引文是书籍或者报告,题目也要斜体。
8、文章中要是有图表的话要置于文末,并且要提供原始图表。
这样说有些空洞,来几个例子。其实以下内容您可以忽略。

MLAMLA主(Modern Language Association)要是用于人文、艺术等学科。由Modern Language Association发布。最新的版本是第7版。
MLA文中的格式一般为作者加页码的形式,这点与APA大致类似,但是没有发表日期。
MLA就不详细叙述了,举个例子就可以明白,现在以下面的文献为例说明一下。

这两种格式的作者都是只写姓,2位作者ALA用&连接,MLA用and连接,3位以上作者都是加et al.
这两个格式的区别在于一个是作者+日期,一个是作者+页码。
AMAAMA主要用于医学、健康及生物科学等学科。
AMA恐怕是最常见的引文格式,在文中是以数字的形式出现。总体来说大致有以几个特点:
1、引文根据在文中出现的顺序而编号。
2、杂志名是以斜体或者下划线的形式出现。
3、作者的姓和名首字母都要大写,如果是6位以上作者,只展示前3位,其它的用et al.省略。
4、杂志名称缩写,要加卷和期及页码。
5、书籍要加版本,如3rd。
以下例文献为例

该引文如在文中第一次出现,则编码1,文末格式如上。
ChicagoChicago主要用于书籍、杂志、新闻等媒体。Chicago有时还叫CMS或者CMOS。但是自从1906第一个规范版本发布以后,统一称为Chicago。

其实也不用记这么多,投稿时根据杂志要求来修改引文格式就可以了。
幸好,EndNote已内置了上百种杂志的格式,直接利用就可以了,也不用管具体格式是如何。因为 EndNote 已经为您完全按照杂志要求把引文格式化了。
但是有的杂志要求比较特殊,EndNote 并未收录其格式要求,此时也不怕,可以EndNote修改引文格式的方法来修改引文格式,然后格式化一下即可。
2020-12-06 labview用I/O Server连接modbus(填坑)
modbus是一种比较通用的协议,用来做数据采集很方便,也很便宜,至少比NI的板卡便宜两个量级,但是配置较为复杂,同时采集速率并不高。对于1s左右采样间隔的数据来说,modbus是一种非常合适的方式。labview使用modbus有很多种方法,其中最方便地第一种就是用共享变量引擎(Shared Variable Engine, SVE)来读写modbus的寄存器(类似模拟IO)和线圈(数字IO)。其他方法比较繁琐,因此这里只研究了这种labview使用I/O Server访问modbus的方式,其它的比如采用VISA的modbus串口/TCP VI进行读写的方式以及采用OPC服务器进行读写的方式在这里就不研究了。
这里采用的win10 64bit中文版系统,Labview 2018(和谐版),同时安装了分布式控制系统(Distributed Control System, DSC),这样就可以使用modbus I/O Server了,根据官网资料,除了labview,必须还要安装DSC或者RT模块,才能使用modbus,其中最好是安装DSC模块。
这里的系统架构如下图所示,Labview负责逻辑和前端展示,与PLC的modbus协议进行交互是通过I/O Server完成的。I/O Server其实是NI 的共享变量引擎SVE的一种插件。所以在运行的时候需要安装和启动SVE。
这个SVE一般在windows里面是以服务形式安装的,安装的服务名为NITaggerService,安装位置是在C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\Shared\Tagger。如果是SVE的一些问题,可以查看这个服务是否启动。但是坑爹的NI没有说log文件在哪儿,有时候查错很麻烦。
安装了DSC之后,就可以启用modbus I/O Server了,对于中文Win10系统装labview 2018而言,坑的地方在于你按照官网教程走完是不行的,会出现modbus变量无法读取的问题,并且显示链接已经断开。如果你手动启动SVE服务(即:NITaggerService),当时是可以启动的,然后你用NI分布式系统管理器(NI distributed system manager)查看变量会不成功,再看服务已经停止了,但是由于没有log文件,所以我们也不知道它什么时候停止的。
后来发现一个方法可以修正这个问题:在NI分布式系统管理器中重新编辑一次I/O Server(参考下土),再在“操作”菜单下点击“启动本地共享变量引擎”,所有的值就正常了。
modbus在I/O Server中的的地址设置比较诡异,是按照[数据解释类型][功能码地址头][PLC格式的起始地址].[位]来区分的。
比如SD400002,其中数据解释类型是SD,表示有符号的双字整数(Signed DWord Integer),双字意味着这是个32位的整数,需要两个寄存器,功能码地址头是4,表示功能码是3,即modbus的保持寄存器(Holding Register)字段,后面的PLC格式的起始地址是5位的00002,也就是从第2个寄存器开始,连续取2个寄存器(即00002和00003),组合成有符号的双字整数。
至于组合的过程涉及到大小端(Endianness)的问题,大小端涉及到byte order和word order的问题,一个word就是一个寄存器(16位),一个byte是8位,当一个寄存器中的两个byte组合并解释为变量的具体取值的时候,可以选择把哪个byte放到前面,哪个byte放到后面,这就是byte order,大部分情况下,byte order是大端在前(big endianness),而word order则是在两个寄存器储存的两个16位的字(word),如何组成32位的数据,不同的厂商会有不同的约定,这个就差异比较大了,需要查看手册。
NI的modbus I/O Server中,word order可以在高级选项中设置,但是byte order是没有地方可以设置的。
此外,NI还有一个比较坑爹的地方是它的modbus tcp连接不支持502以外的端口。也就是一个IP地址最多只能对应一个modbus,虽然可以靠Unit ID来进行区分,但是实际使用中也可能存在用不同端口区分设备的情况。
